VANCOUVER BRIDGE DOWN

SPAN BROKEN BY STEAMER According: to advice received in Auckland, the bridge across the harbour at Vancouver, which was frequently referred to during the sitting of the Waitemata Bridge Commission here, has been considerably damaged as the result of being struck by a steamer. When the steamer, a large American vessel, the Losmar, was caught by treacherous currents as it approached the lift-span of the bridge, it swerved sharply and carried away a span at one end of the bridge. It is estimated that the damage will exceed £ 20,000 and the bridge will probably be closed to all traffic for about two months. This is the third occasion on which the bridge has been considerably damaged. In 1927 it was struck by the s.s. Eurana and in 192 s by the s.s. Norwich City.
