A PIONEER REMEMBERS MR. SAMUEL CROOK LLOYD Although. 91 years of age, Mr. Samuel ; Crook Lloyd, of Silverdale, still enjoys j travelling. He is at present making j one of bis periodical visits to Auck- j land. Mr. Lloyd was born in. County Carmarthen, Wales, on May 2, 1839, and : arrived in New Zealand in* ISi5 by the Adamant, landing at Invercargill. He started life in his adopted land as j a ploughman, but the lure of gold soon j attracted him to Bluespur, Otago. To j quote Air. Lloyd’s own words: “I picked up a little gold that the original rush-folk had overlooked.” He then took service with a Bluespur company i who held sluicing and crushing rights. 1 but he left there in ISSS for Dennison. West Coast, where for the next 17 years he was employed by the "Westport Coal Company, Ltd. His special line there was the sinking of a comprehensive series of airvents through a strata of solid rock, bis gang being responsible for all the stone work, timbering and blasting entailed in the company’s mines. In 1905 Air. Lloyd came north, settling at Silverdale. He was one of the pidneers of the extensive fruit-grow-ing industry in that district, but some six years ago. when in the mid - eighties, he jettisoned his fruitfarming in favour of dairying, in which he is still engaged. Air. Lloyd’s family consists of Air. "William Lloyd, headmaster of the Beresford Street School; Air. David I. plumber, of Auckland; Mr. Hugh Lloyd, accountant. His daughters are: Airs. Bernard, of Dennison; Airs. F. Bartholomew, of Silverdale; Mrs. J. W. R. Fischer, of Takapuna; and Afrs. Stephens, of St. Kilda, Melbourne.
