Obstetrical Appeal Objective Exceeded
£31,741 OBTAINED AUCKLAND’S RESPONSE Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. At a public function held yesterday afternoon, under the auspices of the New Zealand Obstetrical Society, the amounts collected throughout the Dominion to establish a chair of obstetrics at Otago University were announced as follow: Auckland, £11,060; Wellington, £9,101; Canterbury,; £5,130; Otago and Southland, £6,430; total, £31,741. It was also announced that the headquarters organising expenses for the campaign were £370. or less than 1J per cent, of the total. The sum of £25,000, which was the objective of the campaign, was handed to the university authorities today. During the day the executive of the Obstetrical Society met in conference with Sir Lindo Ferguson and Sit' Thomas Sidey, chancellor of Otago University. It was decided that with the surplus money two scholarships be? awarded in obstetrics, one to be known as the Obstetrical Society’s Scholarship and the other as the Auckland Scholarship, in recognition of Auckland’s exceptional response. Sir Thomas Sidey said he hoped it would be possible to subsidise these valuable scholarships, which would make it possible for each scholarship to be of sufficient value to give c. young New Zealand doctor two years’ post-graduate experience in obstetrics in the large centres abroad. Congratulations were received from Lady JBledisloe, on behalf of the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, ancl herself, on the success of the appeal and the indefatigable efforts of the workers.
