FLOODLIGHT SOCCER

CHATHAM CUP HE THISTLE OUTS MANUREWA The first round of the Chatham Cup ties was played by electric floodlight at Blandford Park last evening, before' a good attendance, when Thistle eliminated Manurewa by three goals to one after having all the better of the knock-out. The teams were: Thistle. —Gerrard, Johnson, Hibbert, Dick, G. Wright. H. Gumming, X. Gumming, Wylie, McLeay, I-lislop, and W. Wright. Manurewa. —Parkes, Woods, Ross, Brown, Corbett, W. Clarke, A. Donaldson, Williamson, A. Clarke, Davies, and IT. Donaldson. The ground was in good order for a fast game, but Manurewa was handicapped by the absence of its captain, Lees, who has led the suburban side with such dash in past knock-outs; but with the veteran Jock Corbett filling the vacancy at centre-half, the colts tried a change in tactics, and played the studied and deliberate game in place of the up-and-under bustling style which has won them so many cup ties in previous seasons. The experiment was not a success, but It improved the team work of the newcomers to senior ranking. The Thistle combination worked out better than against Celtic on Saturday, McLeay opening the scoring by rushing a faulty save by Parkes through the goal •before the defender could recover, and the centre followed this up with another goal from short range. Just before the interval Hislop was right on the spot for a well-placed corner kick, and headed past Parkes to put the Scots three up at the change-over. Play was livelier in the second spell, when Manurewa put much more ginger into its attacks, and had the Thistle defenders busy keeping the ’Rewa forwards out. Hibbert infringed while tackling in the penalty area, and Davies scored the losers’ only goal from the spot kick. Thistle secured the upper hand again, and did most of the attacking toward the end, but failed to penetrate the Manurewa defence again, and passed into the next round with a comfortable win by three goals to one.
