MANNA HOUSE SUBSIDY REFUSED BY GOVERNMENT
The Government will not subsidise the Auckland Manna House winch providing meals for the unemployed. Today Mr. W. Tarry. M.P. received the following telegram front the Hon. G W. Forbes, Minister of Lands in replv to his request to the lUght Mon. Sir Joseph Ward for a subsidy of “With reference to the application for a subsidy to the Presbyterian Central Service Association, the Government unemployed relief subsidies are payable only to local authorities. While appreciating the humanitarian work being done bv such organisations throughout the the Government subsidy for such purposes is necessarily limited to Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, otherwise official duplication and over-lapping would result.”
Mr. Parry stated that he was very disappointed at the reply, in view of the fact that the/ institution was doing such splendid work among women and children, who were not being helped by other institutions. He. was sure that Sir Joseph Ward would have to the request- Care of the unemployed was a national responsibility..
