PREMIER’S WIFE WINS
FIRST WOMAN MEMBER IN NEWFOUNDLAND VICTORY AT BY-ELECTION VANCOUVER, Tuesday. A message from St. Johns, Newfoundland, says that in the by-election at Lewisporte for a seat in the Legislative Assembly, Lady Squires, wife of the Prime Minister, Sir Richard Squires, was elected by a large majority. Lady Squires is the first woman to be elected since the passing of the Franchise Act in 1924. Sir Richard Squires, who has been Prime Minister of Newfoundland since October, 1928, at the head of the Liberal Government, married in 1905 Miss Helena Strong, of Newfoundland, and they have five children. By the Act of 1924, all British men over 21 and women over 25 were entitled to vote.
