HOSPITAL LEVIES
COUNTY COUNCIL’S PROTEST The system of apportioning hospital levies on local bodies on the basis of capital valuation was criticised at a meeting of the Manukau County Council yesterday, when advice was received from the Auckland Hospital Board that the council’s proportion for the year was £6,175, an increase of £493. The chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, said the position could only be remedied by the council continuing to hammer at the Government. Mr. S. Rickards moved that the Government be again urged to pass legislation to have the levy assessed, one-half on the population basis and one-half on the rateable value. The motion was carried unanimously. A deputation from the Manukau Beach Estate Association and the Auckland Aero Club asked for improvements to the roads leading to the beach and airdrome. It was decided to make such improvements as finances permitted.
