ISLAND FRUIT
DIRECT STEAMER SERVICE FROM TONGA HELPING THE GROWER The Tongan Government has decided, in the interests of Tongan fruitgrowers, to maintain a direct monthly steamer service between Tonga and Auckland. The service will not begin, however, until September, 1931. The banana industry has languished in Tonga since the use of the present service via Samoa and Fiji. It is a 14-days journey from Nukualofa to Auckland by this route, but the direct service will enable the distance to be covered in less than five days. Before 1914 there was a similar service, and banana-growing flourished in Tonga The Tongan Government will purchase the fruit at 4s a case, any annual profit being distributed as a bonus among the growers. Besides bananas, other produce, including potatoes, kumeras, tomatoes, and pineapples will be supplied to New Zealand. Tongan growers are hoping for the removal of the ban on their oranges, which are forbidden the New Zealand market on account of the fruit fly.
