BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL
HEADMASTER PROMOTED TO DEVONPORT SUCCESSOR APPOINTED The Birkenhead School Committee held its monthly meeting last evening, Mr. J. Macdonald presiding. The headmaster, Mr. A. G. Menzies, reported that the average attendance for the first term ending May 9, and not including the special class, was 310. This was 11 below what the present staffing justified, and might possibly lead to the removal of the present temporary teacher. A request, however, had been made to the authorities to retan the present staff owing to the large classes. It was decided that hot cocoa be again supplied to the children as in previous years. Mr. D. W. Dunlop, secretary of the Education Board, advised that Mr. Menzies, headmaster of the Birkenhead School, had been selected for another appointment, and that Mr. John W. McGechie had been transferred from the position of headmaster at St. Hellers School to the position of headmaster at Birkenhead. Mr. Menzies said he had been appointed to the Devonport School, and would take up his new duties on June 1 He expressed regret at leaving the Birkenhead School, where his stay had been made so pleasant by all. He expressed his thanks to the committee for their enthusiastic co-operation with him at all times. The chairman and members of the committee expressed their regret at Mr. Menzies’ resignation, but complimented him on his promotion to a larger school. It was decided to place on record the very excellent services given to the school by Mr. Menzies. The new headmaster, Mr. J. W. McGechie, was welcomed by the committee. The dangerous practice of the children crossing the road in front of motorists was discussed, and it was decided to write to the Auckland City Council, inviting one of the traffic inspectors to visit the school and to talk to the children on traffic dangers.
A letter is to be sent to the Birkenhead Borough Council supporting its attitude in trying to establish a hospital on the North Shore.
