ENGLISH BY-ELECTION HAS THREE CONTESTANTS SAFEGUARDING CHIEF ISSUE LONDON, Saturday. The following candidates have been nominated for the coming by-election for the seat at Nottingham Central, formerly held by Mr. A. J. Bennett, Conservative:— . Messrs. A. E. Waterson (Labour), T. J. O'Connor (Conservative) and Captain R. C. Berkeley (Liberal). Polling will take place on May 27, and the safeguarding of industries will be the main issue. At the general election Mr. A. J. Bennett polled 14,571 votes. Mrs. E. Barton (Labour) polled 11,573, and Mr. A. Brampton (Liberal), 8,738 votes. Captain Reginald Berkeley was Liberal member for Nottingham Central from 1922 to 1924. He was defeated last year when he stood for North Aberdeen by Mr. Wedgwood Benn, now Secretary of State for India.
