MISTAKEN GENEROSITY
GAVE AWAY ANOTHER MAN’S COAT THEFT CHARGE RESULTS Unwise generosity in presenting to a friend an overcoat that was not his to give resulted in a charge of theft being made against David Asher at the Police Court this morning. Asher, a labourer, aged 19, pleaded guilty to the theft of an overcoat valued at £3 and belonging to William Williamson, on May 17. Sub-Inspector Shanahan said the owner of the coat was a schoolteacher who had left it at the house of a friend. The friend’s step-son, who was giving a party, was taxed with the theft of the coat when it was missed by the owner. He had first denied his guilt, but later said he had given the coat to a man whose name he knew only as George. Asher had a record, having been twice previously convicted of theft and once of unlawfully using a motor-car. Mr. W. J. Campbell, Probation Officer, said Asher was on licence. He was out of work. The youth did not know who had the coat. Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M.: The pawnbroker had the coat. “We shall see if the coat is forthcoming in the meantime,” commented the magistrate, remanding accused for sentence until Saturday.
