ARMED YOUTH CAPTURED IN THEATRE WAS IN DRESSING ROOM An armed youth, surprised on Sat- j urday evening in a dressing-room in the Civic Theatre, appeared at the I Police Court this morning and was | remanded until Saturday to appear before the Children’s Court. The youth, whose age was 16, was an Indian. Two girl ushers had made attempts to hold him and he was finally caught by an attendant after a chase j in which the girls took part. The two ushers, Misses E. Gunn | and M. Cleaver, surprised the intruder j in the dressing-room about nine i o’clock. He endeavoured to escape through another door, but Miss Gunn tried to stop him. The youth escaped from her and she went to get help. Miss Cleaver pursued and caught him, but he struggled free again and was caught by an attendant, Mr. A. T. Brough, while making his way toward the circle. The youth appeared at the Police Court this morning and was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond in that he was found by night in a dressing-room in the Civic Theatre. He was also charged with carrying a five-chambered revolver without lawful excuse and stealing a packet of cigarettes and lOd in money belonging to Elder Shenkel. “Accused says he is 18 years of age, but his father says he is only 16,” remarked Sub-InSpector Shanahan. “The father ought to know,” said Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., remanding accused, a diminutive youth, who was described as a fruiterer, to the Children’s Court. “There are further inquiries to be made,” added the sub-inspector. Police allegations are that the youth stole the revolver from the room of an employee of the National Bank. The weapon, which was unloaded, is said to be the bank’s property.
