MUTE CHILDREN
PROPOSAL FOR SCHOOL Ity AUCKLAND MEETING PLANNED A meeting will be held era Thursday evening to consider establishment of a school for deaf and dumb children in Auckland. Definite information on the* subject will probably be sent to the Minister of Education. MR. R. C. MACPHERSOX, who is convening- the meeting - , said on Saturday that the object was to ascertain the exact number of afflicted children in Auckland and to show the of Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, how serious the position was. The assistance of as many parents as possible would be enlisted. “There is a pitiful lack of accommodation in Auckland for these children.” said Mr. Macpherson. “The school in Newton is for children partially deaf or able to speak a little. The only place, in New Zealand where the totally deaf and dumb can be instructed is at Sumner, near Christchurch. There are parents in Auckland who cannot afford to send their children so far from home.”
