SET FOR JUNE 28 TWO STEEPLECHASES The programme committee of the Waipa Racing Club has decided to submit the following programme to the Auckland District Committee for approval for the meeting on June 28 next: Ngaroto Hurdles, of £100; 1$ miles. Islabanks Handicap, of £100; 7 furlongs. Hunters' Steeplechase Handicap, of £l3O (including trophy valued at £30); 2 miles; for hunters qualified this season. Woodstock Stakes Handicap, of £190; 1$ miles. Haireni Hack Handicap, of £100; 7 furlongs. Te Awamutu Steeplechase, of £200; about miles. Arapuni Handicap, of £120; 6 furlongs.

AMICABLE SETTLEMENT

TE KUITI’S SPORTSMANLIKE ACTION Special to THE SUN TE AWAMUTU, Today. Messrs. F. Quin, A. S. Wallace, M. IT. Tims and J. G. Wynyard (secretary) motored to Te Kuiti on Friday evening to confer with, the Te Kuiti Racing Club officials regarding the dates on which both clubs should race in the coming season. Te Kuiti was represented by Messrs. H. Rothby (president), B. Brewer, E. J. Petersen. A. Black, A. J. Nealon, O. Dalziel, A. E. Howarth and A. D. McLennan. The position was freely discussed. Both sides expressed regret at the unfortunate misunderstanding that had arisen, and in the interest of racing and in view of the cordial relations existing between the two clubs, the Te Kuiti Club offered to withdraw its application for December 13. This courteous treatment was fully appreciated by the Waipa Club delegates. They were fully aware of the awkward position in which Te Kuiti is placed by giving up any claim to December 13, and they made it quite clear that if weather or any other circumstance make it impossible for Te Kuiti to race on its own course, Waipa would willingly provide all possible facilities for the meeting, or part of it (as the case may be) to be held .in Te Awamutu.

GALLANT FOX BEATS THE GALLANT KNIGHT A VALUABLE RACE United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK. Saturday. At Churchill Downs, Louis cille, Kentucky, Mr. William Woodward’s Gallant Fox, with Sande up, won the Derby, of 1£ miles, by two lengths from the Audley Farm's Knight. Fifteen started. The Was run in rain. Time, 2.7 3-5. Both Gallant Fox and Gallant Knight achieved prominence as two-year-olds last season. Gallant Fox was third in the rich Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park, and won the Flash Stakes at Saratoga and the Junior Championship at Aqueduct. ITe was bred by Mr. Woodward, and is a bay colt by Sir Gallahad 111. (as the Lincolnshire winner is known in the United States) out of Marguerite, dam of another good winner. Petee-Wrack. Sir Gallahad’s merits as a sire are widely recognised in America, and big prices are paid for his yearlings. Gallant Knight is by Bright Knight —Ethel Gray. Last season he ran in 18 races and won seven, including the Breeders’ Futurity at Lexington, worth nearly £4,000. Last year the Kentucky Derby was worth betw'een £IO,OOO and £II,OOO to the winner, and £1,200 to the second horse. OPOTIKI NOTES NANCY LEE’S SPELL Special to THE SUN OPOTIKI, Today. At a meeting of the Opotiki Jockey Club, contemplated improvements to the racecourse and buildings were fully discussed. After a lengthy discussion it decided to extend the total i sat or building 15 feet. The railing around the course is also to receive attention. Nancy Lee, Squadron, Golclen Pennant and Iviwinui are all in good fettle just now and are being pushed along for engagements ahead. All are nominated for the Taumarunui meeting to be held on May 24. The first three are also engaged at the Ellerslie winter meeting. Particular note will be given Nancy Lee, who has been off the track for a long spell. Although training reports have been satisfactory, it is doubtful if she wall bo able to reproduce her old form. Still the speH may have done her good and she should be still capable of making a rattling oace.
