DRAMA OF THE AIR
FOUR PLANES LOST AND SERGEANT DROWNED PARACHUTE ENTANGLED HONOLULU, Thursday. A dramatic story of the air and sea was recounted today, when an inter-island steamer arrived with the survivors of a sensational aexial accident which occurred during the military, naval and air manoeuvres. It resulted in the drowning of a noncommissioned officer and the loss of four airplanes. Forty-six machines were taking part in exercises, and while they were flying between Oahuamaui and Hawaii, a sergeant of the Air Corxjs and three other members of the crew attempted to leave a disabled bombingmachine when it was 4,000 ft in the air.
The shrouds of the sergeant’s parachute became entangled in the rigging of the machine, and took him with it to the bottom of the sea. The convoy of seaplanes settled on the huge seas that were running, in efforts to save the survivors. Rescue vessels picked up the occupants of the convoy machines, which after rescuing the crew of' the bomber, drifted helplessly for many hours.
