NEW RUSSELL ROAD
FIRST CAR FROM AUCKLAND WORK ALMOST COMPLETED The first motor-car to travel over the new highway from Whangarei to the Bay of Islands has reached Russell. With the exception of about half a mile near Whangaruru and a few gaps near Russell, amounting in all to about two miles, the new road has been formed and metalled. to give the workmen a chance to complete the job quickly, the road is not open for traffic yet. The main route branches off from the Whangarei-Kawakawa Road 14 miles north of Whangarei and follows easy grades for 8b miles until the climb over the Huruiki Mountains. The road then drops down to Helena Bay, Mokau and Oakura Bay and after passing Tutimatai, it rises to' a big spur through some native bush, where a full view of the coastline, including the Bay of Islands, can be seen. It is about a three hours’ run from Whangarei to Russell.
