TOY PARACHUTES

You make a parachute by taking •iece of tissue paper about live inch

square—a soft paper napkin is good, too—and tying to each corner a thread about seven inches long. Bring all the ends together in a knot and tie on at the knot a bit of wood or a small bead for a weight. Slip your hand under the tissue paper and hold it out of a window or from any high place. When you work your hand gently from under the paper, the parachute will sail and go a long way if there is a little breeze. FROM A LOFTY PERCH 1 am lying on. an old coat on the wash-house roof, my head in the shade of a poplar, and my legs exposed to the sun. It is glorious up here: so high above the world, and so beautifully situated. The sky is exquisite—a lovely blue. A few soft white fluffy clouds rest in their bed. the sky. Re fore me stretches the sea. blue and calm. It has been rough continuously lately, but it is tired now. and is enjoying the rest. The friendly poplars are whispering to me, their leaves, now tinted with fairy brown, gently rustling. Occasionally a brown leaf falls, and lies with a thousand others, on the roof. Even those which lie sleeping here hcrve not lost the power of speech. They talk together in cracked tones, fol Lm ir crispness enables none other. 1 love those leaves just as much as the fresh From my lofty perch 1 feel that “1 am a monarch of all I survey.” Tiki (her kitten) has come up beside me now. He climbs up the poplar tree tlia,t is shading me, and so reaches the roof. He is growing quite big, though be is still only a baby. Lying in the sun among the dry leaves he looks simply adorable. He plays with them, and pounces upon each one that falls. Boudie (her canary) has sent a golden wish fluttering to Happy Town for the Woodpecker, and Tiki lias sent a little black and white wish for the L'.ttle Thought. —Sylvia Woodhouse, aged 13. GARDEN FLOWERS J love to see my garden flowers After a shower of rain, When bright and glowing petals Look fresh and clean again. The little dew-wet violets, The lilies tall and white, The foxgloves and the hollyhocks Are such a pretty sight. All afresh and blooming. Smiling at the sun, I love to see my garden flowers, Fragrant, every one. —Catlileen Fletcher, aged 14.
