STATUS OF HALF-CASTES

NATIVES UNDER LICENSING LAW BARMAN AND CUSTOMER FINED From Our Oiun Correspondent lIUNTLY, Friday. That a half-caste is deemed to be an aboriginal native from a licensing point of view was the crux of a decision today, when George Bo Thierry appeared before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., charged with supplying liquor to off licensed premises at Rangiriri recently. Bo Thierry, who Was represented by Mr. W. G. Clavis, was convicted on one charge and fined £5. Arising out of the charges against Be Thierry, Edward Clarke, barman at tho hotel, was convicted and fined £3 for selling liquor to a native for consumption off hotel premises. The defence raised by counsel was that as Be Thierry was a half-caste native and his name appeared on the Parliamentary roll of Europeans, he was in law a pakeha, but this contention was not upheld by the magistrate.
