NOVEL SPORTS EVENT

CROSS-COUNTRY CYCLE RACE A cross-country “cyclo-pedestrian” race is being organised under the auspices of the New Zealand Union of Cyclists for the immediate future, with probably a championship to follow. All interested are asked to meet on Sunday next at the entrance to Western Springs Stadium at 10 a.m., when they will be shown the course. The arrangements are being carried out by Messrs. G. W. Cleaver and J. C. Stewart.

This race, under the supervision of the Centre, N.Z.U.C., is over a course containing a small proportion of places where the riders must dismount, and the exercise of good judgment in this matter is quite important. In England the races are very popular, even with women who compete in quite difficult events. In France, Belgium, and other countries the phase of the sport has reached quite large proportions, and indeed there is held every year in the Foret de Fontainbleau outside of Paris an . international “Criterium,” as many as six nations being represented in 1929.
