APPLIED ART

SUGGESTION TO COMBINE EXHIBITS MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY A suggestion that the Auckland Art Gallery and the War Memorial Museum combine to make one comprehensive collection of applied art was suggested by Mr. H. E. Vaile, president of the Auckland Institute and Museum, at the opening of the loan exhibition of Wedgwood ware. MR. VAILE stated that the museum ay-J. was devoted to science and applied art, but the art section AA’as by no means as good as it might be. If the articles in the Art Gallery could be lent to the museum. the museum would probably be A\ r arranted in engaging, for a time at any rate, an expert who would examine, classify, arrange and properly catalogue and label the exhibits. In this way their valup to students and interest for the lay visitors AA’ould be greatly increased. The articles to which Mr. Vaile refers are principally in the "collection of the late Mr. J. T. Mackelvie, and are under the control of his trustees. They include very choice collections of porcelain, enamels, glass, metal-work, clocks and Avatches, ivories and bronzes. A number of Maori and other articles given to the city by Sir George Grey, were lent to the museum some time ago, creating something in the nature of a precedent.
