ON MEDICAL ADVICE
RETIREMENT CONSIDERED NECESSARY HOPE OF IMPROVEMENT Special to THE SUN ROTORUA, Today. “Until the medical advice was tendered to us on Wednesday, not one of the Ministers knew that Sir Joseph Ward’s resignation was imperative.” Thus a statement from official quarters. It was also stated that Sir Joseph is resigning only his office as Prime Minister. He will still retain his seat as a member of Parliament. It is understood that it was on Wednesday that the decision to retire was made. Sir Joseph has been under the care of Dr. J. D. C. Duncan, of Rotorua, an old friend of the family, and Dr. Duncan discussed the position at length with members of the Cabinet on Wednesday. A further meeting was held on Thursday, lasting about

an hour, after which the official announcement was made. It was stated that the step was taken at the urgent advice of Sir Joseph’s medical man. It was necessary so that his own recuperative powers should not be checked and so that the work for the session should not be delayed. It is believed that relieved of the responsibility and strain of office, Sir Joseph will make a steady improvement in health. It is stated that his resignation will go forward to the Gov-ernor-General almost immediately, probably within a week.
