THE CHANNEL TUNNEL
MACDONALD ASKS TIME FOR CLOSE INQUIRY MILITARY FACTORS British Official Wireless RUGBY, Wednesday. The Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, stated in the House of Commons today, that the inquiry into the military aspect of the Channel Tunnel scheme was taken up as soon as the report of the committee on the economic aspect was received and had been continued ever since. The project as set forth in the economic report contained a considerable amount of detail that was not available when the question was last reviewed by the Committee of Imperial Defence. It was found necessary to re-examine the whole matter in the light of the latest technical developments, and, in order to meet the changed conditions, new methods had to be considered aad worked out in regard to the military and financial aspects. It wouTd be a profound mistake to scamp this inquiry, only to find afterward that some essential factor bearing on the final decision had been overlooked. As soon as the recommendations of the committee of Imperial Defence were available the entire question in all its aspects would be examined by the Government, after which an announcement of the Government’s policy would be made in Parliament.
