PECULIAR ACCIDENT

RAILWAY FIREMAN INJURED AT OHAKUNE STRUCK BY VAN WINDOW Leaning from the engine-cab Vhile [ shunting on to the North express about 10 o'clock last evening, a railway fireman named Axelby had the muscles of his forearm torn to pieces, his collarbone broken and received severe cuts on one side of his fact through striking the jutting window of a van on the adjoining track. The engine of the North express is changed at Ohakune, and Mr. Axelby was backing the engine on to the main train. A cloud of steam from the engine obscured the view and he leaned through the window of the engine-cab to see where he was going. A van which had been backed on to the adjoining line was hidden by the smoke and Mr. Alelby could not see it. Suddenly the bay-window of the van struck him on the side inflicting severe injuries. The van window was smashed to pieces. The injured man. who resides at Ohakune, received immediate medical attention, and is progressing satisfactorily.
