CLAIM FOR DAMAGES
LAD’S HAND CAUGHT IN LIFT ROPE FINGERS CUT OFF A Chum totalling £I,OOO against Bond, and Bond, merchants, by a lad, Charles Watt Greenslade, son of the town clerk of Henderson, for injuries suffered by a lift while in the employ or defendants, was heard in the feupremo Court this morning before Mr. Justice Smith. H S d , < ? ow appeared for plaintiff and Mr. Sellar for the defendants. The details of the claim are £52 for loss of earnings, £ll for hospital, medical ana travelling expenses, and £937 for general damages. In outlining the case, Mr. Haddow said that 3 r oung Greenslade was playing with other boys during the lunch hour on September 4, when he and another boy decided to climb on to the top of a stack of sacks which were situated near the lift in the storerbom of the warehouse. On rising to jump down, he grasped the stoel rope of the lift near where it runs round a heavy pulley. But at that moment the c as * n motion by someone on the floor below, and plaintiff’s left hand was caught between the pulley and the rope. His -whole left hand, except the thumb, was cut off across the palm, while the right hand was also seriously injured. In his evidence young Greenslade told the story of his injury. He was In the hospital for nine days and was an out-patient for about two months. After evidence had been called for plaintiff, Mr. Sellers moved for a nonsuit on the ground that plaintiff had failed to prove any break of a dutv on the part of defendant. (Proceeding.)
