YESTERDAY'S TRIALS
INTERESTING SCHOOLING FEW GALLOPS OF NOTE Special to THE SUE WANGANUI, Tuesday. 1 Unlike the scene that usually prevails before a steeplechase meeting at ! Wanganui, and for that matter almost i anywhere in the Dominion, there was , not much activity so far as training j operations on the Wanganui course; were concerned this morning. The large crowd of spectators might have led one to anticipate that something unusual in track work was going to take place, or that some of the more prominent candidates for steeplechase honours would be schooled over what passes these days for “big country.” Such failed to materialise, however, though there was one interesting display over the battens by a trio of hurdlers. Conditions were of the best for training operations, and No. 1 track, which vas in good order, was used by several trainers Mho M'anted to send their charges along. Still, there Mas nothing of a sensational order. An Early Bird It is unusual for any fast work to be done before breakfast these cold mornings, but it Mas reported that Paleta had been out and had slipped along fast over five furlongs. The Leighton gelding was never bettor than at present, and if he can be kept up to serious business after his lengthy absence from the turf he should be a force to be reckoned with in bis early engagements. After breakfast there Mere many visitors, quite a number of whom indulged in useful pace Mork. Brigadier Bill, who does not please track watchers as much as he did 12 months ago, strode along over a couple of circuits on the plough, No fault could be found in the manner in which he struck out, though he did not impress. A pair of steeplechase candidates were companions in a couple of circuits on No. 2 track, moving along at three-quarter pace. They Mere Bon- i jola and Matu, winner and runner-up respectively in the Egmont Steeplechase last Thursday. Neither appears to have suffered as a result of the exertions in that event. If anything, Matu appears a great deal improved which could be expected of him. Ponjola hit out well. Mangahaeri finished well in front of Danny Boy over half a mile on No. 1 track, the watch registering 50 4-5, after tlio initial quarter had been cut out in a tick under 25. Llyn Du and Potoaform were partnered in a seven-furlong task on No. 1 track, but the Kilbroney gelding finished in front of the son of Potoa in 1.34, with the first two furlongs left behind in 2G 2-5. Potoaform was steadied after going half a mile. V/ent Very Fast Valstreet showed a great burst of speed in a task on the plough, but was not timed. The three-year-old Valkyrian gelding did not lose any friends as a result of his display at Hawera last Saturday, though lie showed marked disinclination to face the barrier. Seven furlongs in 1.33 on No. 1 track was what the watch recorded as the result of a gallop by Austerity and Joyspear, with not much between them, though the first-named was apparently doing best at the finish. Blue Paper and a companion were associated in a task over six furlongs, the last five of which were covered in 1.3 2-5. Blue Paper is particularly smart over five furlongs, but she stops rather quickly after that. Town Bird Jumps Town Bird was sent over three hurdles, and executed that task to satisfaction. Kowliatu Mas schooled over the steeplechase fences, and cleared them with his usual precision, though the pace was not on, the Quarantine gelding not being accompanied. A bout over the battens was provided by Elicit, Perle de Leon, and Airforce, the trio being sent over five obstacles. They kept well together all the way, and gave as fine a display of jumping as could have been wished, finishing together. No mistakes were made by any of the three. Prince Lu worked on the plough. He appears to be very well. Flying Swift Mas sent over the steeplechase fences, and cleared them with a certain amount of ability. Just An Idea and Royal Tractor went together for half a mile, after which Royal Tractor went on, and his companion Mas steadied. Royal Tractor took a tick over 1.20. Among others allotted useful tasks of a varying nature Mere Statuary, Werata, Atholspear, Tahoma, Ben-Hur, Valma, Second Thought, Glenstar, Pedestal, Sir Mercury, Double Soult, and Mountain Heath. L. G. Morris arrived in town this afternoon from Kordell with his team of five, comprising Laughing Prince, Cashier, High Falutin’, Equitant, and Freehold. Kaihoro arrived during the afternoon, as did Treasury, Crown Link, and Flying Juliet.
