Wanganui Fixture

OPENING DAY TOMORROW The Prospects Discussed

THIS week’s big attraction to tire racing world is the winter fixture to be opened tomorrow by the Wanganui Jockey Club, the concluding day’s racing being set down for Saturday. The course was in excellent order this morning'. “Early Bird’s” review of tomorrow’s programme is appended.

The Wanganui meeting is the last one prior to the Great Northern fixture at Ellerslie, so that it offers the last opportunity for a study of form before the really big events or the jumping season become due. Tomorrow’s programme starts with the Purua Hack—First Division There are several speedy sorts engaged here, notably Werata, Tahoma, Blue Paper, Brilliant Light, Mangahaeri, Latakia, Coon Song and Paiko. Favourites may be BRILLIANT LIGHT PAIKO. Purua Hack—Second Division The horse at the top of this division is one of class, and it has to be remembered that he defeated Brilliant Light in a track trial before the latter went on to win at Hawera. Callapat will be suited by this course, and Treasury goes so fast that if he catches the jump-out even Hunting Boy will be hard put to it to overhaul him round the turns. Statuary, Auctioneer, Ben Hur, Tentcall and Valstreet are others that will receive support, but those to carry the money may be TREASURY HUNTING BOY. Hack Steeplechase The two seconds registered at Hawera last week by Diana’s Lad in his first attempts over the big fences were impressive. Maidos was travelling nicely the first day at Hawera when he fell, and Red Bank is a fine jumper about to make his debut over the big ones. Waitaunaha won so well last week that he will have to be seriously considered, and interest will be taken in Bendower’s performance, for he is a safe conveyance. Double Soult shaped well last week at the Egmont meeting, and indicated that he has the ability and may improve here. Calithe is a likely one; he went well in the Tongahoe Hurdles last week, and is a fine ’chaser. Hymestrason and Flying Swift both jump well, but are novices at this game. Those that should be right in the market are WAITAUNAHA DIANA’S LAD. Wanganui Steeplechase A field of eight for the big crosscountry event represents the average number in this race for some years past. Brigadier Bill has won the event for the past couple of years, but his Hawera showings were not so promising and he will need to make considerable improvement. Democratic is an interesting recruit, and his third at Hawera last week showed that he is a good one in the making. Matu should be all the better for his outing last week, and he is g.oing to be one of the really hard ones to head off. Maunga will want more racing, and Airtight, after his good Ellerslie form, disappointed by failing to do better than two thirds over the Hawera

country; that may scarcely be good enough for the Wanganui race. Birkbeck will improve on Egmont running, for he is a very fit horse; he was lame after Egmont, however. Ponjola won handsomely the Egmont Steeplechase, giving a brilliant display of jumping,, and a repetition will see him adding tomorrow’s stake to his record. Kowhatu is not fancied. In a good pool the elect of backers may be PONJOLA MATU. Kaitoko. Hack Hurdles This is generally one of the hardest races to sum up at this meeting, what with a number of novice jumpers being tried out. Some that will be in demand are Whenuanui, Vivo, Royal Acre, Town Bird, Skyrider, Airforce,

THE ACCEPTANCES

Flying Swift, Four Aces, Calithe and -i First Ruler, and further reduced the i favourites may comprise ROYAL ACRE. SKYRIDER Century Hurdles Of the eight engaged here, all but two —Perle de Leon and Diana’s Lad—figure in the Great Northern Hurdles next month, so that there will be a lot of interest taken in the race. Mister Gamp has but one pound more tomorrow than what he has at Ellerslie, and on the surface that makes it look a good thing for him; that is if he is in th#> condition and iinnn that

score there is a slight doubt. The small field will assist him. Elicit is to meet Mister Gamp on a couple of pounds better terms than at Ellerslie, and recent racing may stand to Elicit. Prince Lu will set a merry pace, and on this small course he may be able to see it right out. Glenstar’s stamina is open to question, so that his performance, too, will be interesting in so far as it will give some .indication of his ability to stay. Perle de Leon may not be thoroughly tuned up, and Aurora Borealis was a winner last Saturday over the Hawera country. How the Day Comet mare will take to the hurdling game after her two races in Taranaki over the bigger fences remains to b© seCn. Diana’s Lad is in similar case; as a hurdler he is a good performer. Whisogne does not stay too well. It is a modest field, with a possibility of a further shrinkage in the number of starters to a bare twodividend proposition. The public may express a fancy for ELICIT PRINCE LU. Connolly Handicap Most of the 15 paid up for in the principal flat event have been racing recently. Bright Glow disappointed at Avondale. The Swell is in form just now, but the distance may bother him a bit. Mendip may want a race, and Cashier was backed and beaten in the Gold Cup at Feilding last month, his form being below par. He is not over consistent. Admiral Drake is credited with doing good work at Hastings, and for a good three-year-old he ought to bo well placed here. Mountain Heath disappointed at Hawera, prior to which he was doing great track work. High Falutin’ is the stable’s second string to Cashier, and Austerity is a sticker who may do well in open company. Flying Juliet and Llyn Du may be the best of the remainder. In the market most strongly may be CASHIER ADMIRAL DRAKE. Borough Handicap There will be a scramble for early positions. Some of those that will be in keen demand are Benzora, Leitrim, Royal Parade, Paleta, Moa Bird, Kaihoro, Just So, Just an Idea, Potoaform, Equitant and Cuticle, to mention just a few of the 25 originally paid up for. It is an extremely hard race to sort out, there being so many runners, but with a small marble there will be money forthcoming for LEITRIM ROYAL PARADE. Riders At Wanganui Riding engagements announced for Wanganui, where Southern horsemen and horses are concerned, are: H. Gordon.—First Ruler. D. O’Connor.—Mister Gamp. B. H. Morris.—Brilliant Light. A. McDonald.— Red Bank, Democratic and Elicit. T. Green.—Hunting Boy, Tahoma and Royal Parade. K. Voitre.—Callanmore, Coon Song, Austerity and Treasury. W. Broughton.—Grand Jury, Equitant and Poppy Day. J. McDowell.—Rioghail.
