PRODUCE MARKET QUIET
POSITION IN CANTERBURY Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The grain and produce market continues with little business passing. Wheat is now in shorter supply, and it is assumed that most of the “free” wheat has ben disposed of. There is very little alteration in values, which today are 5s 8d to 5s 9d for Tuscan, 5s 9d to 5s lOd for Hunters, and 5s lid to 6d for Pearl, on trucks in each case. Fowl wheat is hard to obtain at 5s lid, f.0.b., s.i. There is a good demand from the North Island. Oats in Canterbury are extremely hard to obtain, and buyers who have to obtain immediate supplies here have to pay 3d and 4d more than the quotation in the South. Oats cannot be bought for Lyttelton shipment under 4s Id, f.0.b., s.i. A grade Gartons are worth about 3s 6d on trucks, and B grade 3s 3d. There is not a great of chaff offering, and the price remains firm at £ 5 to £ 5 2s 6d a tun on trucks. Not much business is being done in potatoes at present at the on-trucks price of £3 to £3 ss. The prompt position is weak, but the forward position: is a little stronger. The MayJuna quotation is £4 10s, July £5 2s 6d, and July-September £5 10s to £5 12s 6d. It is reported that in South Canterbury, where there was an increased acreage and a good crop, farmers are inclined to hold supplies, and their ideas of values is £ 3 15s a ton, on trucks. The onion market continues lifeless, at the nominal value of 30s to 35s a ton. There is scarcely any business passing in small seeds, and values for them are unaltered. Merchants agree that less seed has been bought for the season than in any other season for many years.
