FROM STEAM TO OIL
VESSELS TO BE CONVERTED In order to reduce operating costs and to increase speed of transit, five well-known coastal steamers are to be converted into motor-vessels. Two Auckland-East Coast vessels, the Awahou, 407 tons, and the Pukeko, 736 tons, are to be treated similarly to to the Koutunui, which recently had heavy-oil propulsion engines installed hefe. These vessels are owned by Richardson and Company, of Xapier. The Awahou is leaving this evening on her last trip before the alteration. While she is laid up, the Parera will take over her run to Hicks, Tolaga and Tokomaru Bays and Gisborne. The Pukeko will not undergo this change until the Awahou is again running. Other steamers for which plans for conversion to oil are under way are the Kapiti, 242 tons, the Kapuni, 3SS tons, and the Hawera. 374 tons, which have long been in the Wellington-Wanganui-Patea trade.
