CHAMPION OF LABOUR
RT. HON. JOHN WHEATLEY, M.F., DEAD AT 61 WELL-KNOWN COMMONER Reccl. 1.45 p.m. LONDON, Monday. Tlie death, has occurred of the Rt. Hon. John Wheatley, member for Shettleston, Glasgow, in the House of Commons. He was aged 61 years. Mr. John Wheatley had been member for the Shettleston Division of Glasgow since 1922. He was a member of the Irish labouring class, and was a well known exponent of the Labour cause in the House of Commons. After his education at the village schools in Lanarkshire, he worked as a miner for some years, and then served on the local county council and subsequently on the Glasgow Corporation. Mr. Wheatley was Minister of Health in Mr. MacDonald’s Cabinet during Labour’s short regime in 1924. He wrote many pamphlets on Labour and Socialist questions.
