TEMPLE UNEARTHED

WELL-PRESERVED RUINS FROM OLD BABYLON EXCAVATIONS AT OR Times Cable. llecd. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, Monday. The excavation of a low and inconspicuous mound at Ur during the last ten days before the closing of the season’s work revealed a temple built by King Nebuchadnezzar 11. in 600 B.C. Apparently the land was reclaimed from the old harbour, as the foundations had sunk and the walls on one side were aslant. The temple is surprisingly preserved, the mud-brick walls retaining the plaster white-wash, although the decorations have vanished. The building is at present 20ft high, though originally it was a lofty structure. King Nebuchadnezzar 11. of Babylon reigned in 604-561 8.C., restored many of the destroyed temples and rebuilt Babylon, when excavations in 1599 and 1911 revealed his palace, temples, gates, walls and canals. During his reign Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah thrice, taking Jerusalem and carrying many Jews into captivity. In 586 8.C., he captured Tyre after a 12 years’ siege, and invaded Egypt.
