SEEN BY POLICE
EARLY MORNING THEFT OF <e TIMBER FINE OF £5 IMPOSED As a result of thefts from a partly constructed building, a watch was kept by the police, and Edward Evans was seen removing a few sticks of timber at five o’clock in the morning. He was fined £5 at the Police Court this morning, but it was made clear that the police did not hold accused responsible for the other thefts that had been committed. Evans, through Mr. Moody, admitted the theft of timber value' at 5s from Charles Ravenshall on May 6. Counsel said it was accused’s first appearance before the court. He had happened to see the small pieces of timber, which were of little value, and took them away. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: What was he doing out at that time in the morning? Counsel explained that the man was learning to drive a delivery van, and was out in it for the first time alone. Default of the fine fixed at a month’s imprisonment,' and Evans was given a week in which to find the money.
