ABOLISHING SPECTACLES

EXPERIMENTS OF A SWISS PROFESSOR According to the “Basler Nachrichten,” a Zurich paper, an invention by Professor L. Heine, of Bale, may lead to the abolition of spectacles and eyeglasses. The professor has constructed a “contact glass,” to be fixed under the eyelids. The idea is not new. Nearly 40 years ago Professor Pfluger, of Berne, and Professor Fick, of Zurich, experimented on similar lines. But their glasses irritated the eyes so much that, even after injection of a weak solution of salt and cocaine, the patients could not stand the glasses longer than a few hours. Professor Heine has now succeeded in rendering his “contact glasses” tolerable for a whole day, but the glasses are not easily removed, and only short-sight or long-sight can be corrected.
