POMPEIUS OUT

Pompeius was scratched at 10.20 a.m. today for both the Great Northern Hurdles and Great Northern Steeplechase. Pompeius was the ruling favourite for the Great Northern Steeplechase, and his defection represents a big financial loss to early speckers and a corresponding increase in the coffers of the bookmakers. The great majority of doubles taken all ended with Pompeius in the Steeplechase. The Lucullus gelding still remains in the Cornwall Handicap. Is it possible that he is to be kept for flat racing? However, the scratching of Pompeius is not a good omen, and any further developments or information will be eagerly awaited. Of course there is also the chance that the horse was hurt while schooling. The stable still has Star Comet left to represent it in the Great Northern Hurdles and Great Northern Steeplechase.
