CITY BUS TERMINAL
OWNERS FAVOUR START FROM STURDEE ST. CHIEF INSPECTOR’S VIEW Certain bus companies have been varying the condition of their licences by starting from Sturdee Street in the evenings, instead of from Commerce Street. This was reported to the Transport Board today by the secretary, Mr. W. St. J. Clarke, who said that instead of leaving the City via Fort Street and Anzac Avenue, some buses were now leaving Sturdee Street and travelling up Queen Street. Mr. Clarke conferred with the chief traffic inspector, Mr. G. R. Hogan, who was of the opinion that the Sturdee Street stand was more suitable as a loading centre in the evening. Mr. Clarke pointed out that if bus owners wished to make use of the new starting point they would have to apply for amendment of route. It was desirable, in any event, that a common terminal be fixed. In moving that the board approve Sturdee Street, the deputy-chairman, Mr. G. Baildon, remarked that centre was a convenient place for the public. The motion was agreed to and bus operators will be asked to have their licences amended. “We should not make it inandatory,” commented Mr. E. H. Imtter.
