RAILWAYMEN ANXIOUS
RETRENCHMENT RUMOURS ABROAD SENIOR POSITIONS MAY GO Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. It is reported in Christchurch that senior railway officers throughout the Dominion are showing some anxiety as to their future, in view of the persistent rumours of reorganisation that are in circulation in the service. Nothing very definite is known to the great majority, but fears exist that an effort will be made to reduce costs by eliminating some of the senior positions. At the present moment three importart positions are vacant, or are soon likely to be vacant in the South Island. These are the positions of outdoor assistant-traffic manager at Christchurch, stationmaster at Dunedin and stationmaster at Christchurch. “NO FOUNDATION” DENIAL BY MR. STERLING Press Associaiio7i WELLINGTON, Today. When the Christchurch telegram about the railways was referred to him Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager of railways, declined to make any statement beyond declaring that there was no foundation for such a canard, as no decision had been arrived at. The rumour had probably arisen as the result of the general outline given by him in his report to Parliament last session of means by which he thinks divisional control could be further developed, and his statement that concrete proposals in connection with reorganisation changes would be worked out during the coming year. 3 v i ? understood that those proposals hav not yet been advanced to the stage o' a definite decision being reached and that they are still under consideration.
