ESCAPING TARIFFS

TOBACCO FACTORY FOR AUSTRALIA USE OF N.Z. PRODUCT “The Australian tariffs are robbing us of our profits and the only way we can get past them is to open a factory in that country.” So Mr. Fred. Adamson, Australian director for the United Kingdom Tobacco Company, told a SUN representative this afternoon. Mr. Adamson, who arrived from Australia this afternoon on the Ulimaroa, said that the erection of the Australian factory had already been decided upon. It would be established in Melbourne. The last time Mr. Adamson was in New Zealand he had an opportunity of inspecting most of the tobacco fields and since then his company has purchased 23,0001bs of New Zealand tobacco which had been blended with other tobacco and sent back to New Zealand in the form of cigarettes. He said that for cigarette manufacture it was quite suitable for blending with other tobaccos, and also, when blended, quite suitable for pipe tobacco.. * Although' times were hard in most parts of the world, he said that the tobacco industry today was quite prosperous. It was true that British tobacco shares had dropped recently, but this was only in sympathy with the general depression. Personally, he was quite confident of the future of the industry.

Mr. Adamson will spend six weeks in the Dominion before returning to Australia.
