WOULD NOT FAG

FEAR DRIVES SCHOOLBOY TO HANG HIMSELF PUBLIC SCHOOLS INDICTED LONDON, Saturday. At the inquest concerning the death °f Charles Fairhurst, aged 14, a son of the vicar of Barrowford, who hanged himself on the day before he was to return to Sedbergli, a North pt England public school, his father informed the coroner that his son comjnitted suicide by hanging himself in his bedroom. The father said his son feared fagSuig, especially as the prefects had the right to thrash the youngsters who did not do the fagging properly. Mr. Graham Smith, the headmaster °f Sedbergh, in his evidence, said there was nothing terrible or derogatory in fagging. It merely taught small boys habits of prompt obedience tind cleanliness. The prefects could punish only to the- extent of two strokes. Fairhurst had never been Punished. The jury added a ridijr to their verdict that fagging in public schools should be abolished. Canon 11. A. Sawyer, headmaster of Shrewsbury School, says he thinks controlled fagging provides a most faiuable training.
