GRIMMETT GETS TEAM FOR 37 RUNS PLAY AGAINST YORKSHIRE LONDON, Saturday. The outstanding feature of the opening day's play in the match between the Australian cricketers and Yorkshire. at Bramall Lane. Sheffield, was the bowling of Grimmett. who took all 10 Yorkshire wickets for 37 runs. At the close of play Yorkshire had made 155. and the Australians had lost one wicket for 69 runs. The ground is situated in the midst of a manufacturing district. A large section of the outfield was hard and without grass, as a result of football having been played on it. The sun filtered through a smoke pall, but the v. eather was much warmer than it was for the Essex match. In spite of a slight frost in the morning, after light rain yesterday, the wicket was good, but rain interrupted play in tho afternoon. and stumps were drawn at 6.15 p.m. owing to the bad light. WICKET SLOW Of the visiting Australians, Jackson, Fairfax. Oldfield and Hurwood did not play today. A. T. Barber, last year captain of Oxford University, won the toss and sent his men in. The umpires were Oates and Beet. Tho wicket seemed slow and easy. Holmes and Sutcliffe played lively cricket, scoring freely off Wall and Uornibrook, although A’Beckett sent down two successive maiden overs. The damp wicket became cut up and the batsmen repeatedly patted the uneven portions. A’Beckett’s good length made the batsmen quieter. Grimmett came on, and only five runs, including a four off A’Beckett, were scored in five overs. Fifty runs took 70 minutes to make, and the position looked bad for Australia. Then a ball from Grimmett kept unexpectedly low to the off and Holmes, changing his stroke, edged the ball into the wicket. It was the last ball of the over. Sutcliffe continued exuberantly, and got 50 runs in 100 minutes. Th£n he steadied down, but gave the Australians a taste of real batsmansliip until he played forward to a beautiful ball from Grimmett. which Walker snapped up neatly. His score included nine fours and two sixes. He bad batted for 125 minutes. CROWD DISAPPROVES When Walker off Grimmett dismissed Barber the crowd roared its disapproval. and the real Yorkshire barracking began with cries of “How's that!” at almost every ball. Grim-
! mett disposed of the other batsmen iu short order, finishing up by making • Wood send up an easy catch to Riel- - ! ardson at silly mid-off. and then taking Bowes’s leg st,umi» "ith his ne ball. The team rushed to congratuh the bowler on his feat in taking a . 10 wickets, and the crowd stood up and cheered. His full analysis was: 22 over and three balls, eight maider*. 37 runs, 10 wickets. On the preview* tour he took six wickets for S 7 against Yorkshire. The Australians began their innings at 4.5 p.m. Later a misty rain set in. Fonsford played across to or • from Robinson when he seemed we:? j set. Bradman received an ovation | cn taking the field. When the t» adjournment came rain fell steadiU tut the game was resumed at six o’clock in a very poor light. Near ' all the spectators had now* left tho ground. and after a-quarter of an hour’s play an appeal against the bad light was allojved, and stumps wc:« j drawn. Bradman was confident and even 1 aggressive when facing Rhodes. Details of the scores are as fo: YORKSHIRE First Innings.
