MR. HOLLAND GIVES INTERESTING ADDRESS AT FABIAN SOCIETY
At the Unity Hall, Queen Street, on Saturday evening, an excellent lecture was given by Mr, H. E. Holland, Leader of the Labour Party, to members of the Fabian Society, who came in large numbers. Mr. Holland’s lecture was on the peace movement. Mr. Skuse was in the chair, and Mrs. Jenkinson and Mr. Lofts acted as hostess and host, providing supper.

Gay Athenian Revel MRS. GILM'OUR IS HOSTESS “A Night in Holland” was the name given to a delightfully quajnt evening given by the Athenian Club on Saturday in the Amateur Operatic Society’s hall. Mrs. Gilmour was hostess, and provided a most enjoyable programme for the members and guests. The hall was decorated with multicoloured streamers; and - the stage, tvhich was banked with tulips, represented a Dutch mill scene. Excellent dance music was played by the Kit Kat Band. During the evening Dutch favours were distributed among the guests. Those who contributed items were: Miss Patty Gilmour, clog dance; the New Zealand Four, Mr. Whiteford Waugh’s orchestra, Mr. Jack Davey, and Miss Thelma Clarke. The competitions were won by Mrs. N. 2STewdick. Miss D. Wilson, and Mr. S. Kay. Mrs. Gilmour received her guests v * earing a frock of flame georgette, with a floral velvet bridge coat. WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT MATATA Tbe monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held last Thursday Mrs Withy presiding. Several members of the Manawahe Women's Institute were visitors to the meeting. The roll-call brought forward some very ancient treasures, some being over two hundred years old. The competition for the best posy was Avon by Nlrs. A. Burt. Nlrs. Wilson gave a very interesting demonstration of triplex needlework. Members took the opportunity to bid farewell to Mrs. King, one of the l original members of the institute, who I is leaving the district, and Mrs. Withy presented her with a handbag from the members. China and Japan, and more particularly of what she hart gleaned of the culture and customs of these countries. Miss Verna Wish art delighted present with her singing and accompanied on the piano by Mrs 1 Thomson. A guessing competition : followed, and later Hr. de Courey and Miss Russell entertained the gathering i at afternoon tea. ; About 50 members of the Federation j were present, including the following j members of the executive:— £> r 1 Buckley Turkington, president; Dr! | Gladys Montgomery and Miss Clous- ; ton, vice-presidents: Mrs. A. TAKAPUNA WEDDING
BRIDE CARRIES BOUQUET OF WHITE ROSES MALCOLM— BROWN The Rev. W. G. Monckton, M.A., officiated at a charming wedding whicT was celebrated on Saturday evening at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Takapuna. The bride was Miss Edna May Brown, second daughter of Mr. anrf Mrs. H. J. Brown, of Takapuna, and she was married to Mr. Lionel E. Malcolm, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Malcolm, of Milford. The bride was given away by hexfather. Her frock was a rich blending of ivory ring velvet and georgette, the corsage and the skirt panel being of the former material, while successive tiers of georgette frills were employed on the skirt. This dipped to full anklelength at the back, and was relieved with tiny silver rosettes. The bridal veil was of silk net with hand-worked floral decorations. Clusters of brilliants gave a distinctive touch to the head-dress, which fell away to short train-length from a mop-cap surmounted with a double coronet of orange blossom. A beautiful shower bouquet of white roses with touches of pink completed a charming toilette. Miss Violet Brown, a sister, attended the bride as her maid, her choice bring a frock of cameo pink silk lace with a pink georgette corsage. Around this was an edging of dainty silver cording, while a loose girdle of brilliants encircled the waist. The skirt was dipped to the ground at the back, a contrasting touch being given by a. long tie bow. Her pink felt hat was edged with tulle and relieved with silver braiding. She carried a shower bouquet of pink chrysanthemums with maidenhair fern reliefs. The duties of best man were carried out by Mr. Vivian Malcolm, brother of the bridegroom.
After the ceremony a reception was held in the Takapuna branch of the Auckland Gas Company, Ltd., a large number of guests being present. Mrs. Brown . wore a frock of electric blue crepe de chine with a contrasting yoke of fawn. Her hat of blue felt toned with the frock, and she carried a posy of autumn-tinted flowers *
MERRY EVENING AT PIRATE SHIPPE
SEASIDE CABARET A merry evening was spent by those dancers who journeyed to the Pirate Shippe on Saturday evening. Ye Versatile Pirates’ Orchestra dispensed an enjoyable programme of dance tunes. AMONG THOSE PRESENT Nlrs. G. Downer wore a frock of powder blue moire. Mrs. E. Fyffe had on cherry georgette, beaded in silver. Nlrs. R. "Watkins chose blue and silver shot taffeta, with an indian gold wrap. Mrs. H. R. Tyler's frock was of peach taffeta and gold lace. Miss A. Macgregor was in pink georgette with gold beading. Nliss D. Duder chose black ehantilly ia.ee over flesh georg€-tto. Miss M. Fairless wore a saxe blue taffeta frock with a lemon shawl. Miss Williams was wearing it frock of cinnamon brocade. Nliss Daysy Pilches had on peach crepe de chine, trimmed silver and pearls. Nliss M. Esther had chosen powder blue ring velvet. Miss NI. Mason was in blue chenille georgette. Miss Roberts chose a frock of floral georgette over pink. Miss N. Sturtevgnt'R frock was of coral pink satin. Miss P. Mac indoe was gowned In red floral ninon. Miss W. Dow ner wore black panne velvet and georgette. Miss E. Hansen's gown was of mist blue satin with shoulder posy.
PLUNKET WORK IN THE PROVINCE
HAMILTON BRANCH Special efforts made by the Hamilton branch of the Plunket Society during the last year resulted in £254 being raised to carry on the work. In the branch's antxal report it was stated that 213 new cases had been dealt with at Hamilton and 103 at FTankton. Visits received by and made by nurses at Hamilton totalled 9.275, and at Frankton 4.7G4. The balance sheet showed that cash in hand amounted to £2IS. Assets were valued at £3,179.
HUNTLY Th© Huntly sub-branch of the Plunket Society held its annual meeting in the Plunket room recently. Mr. K. S. Caldwell, presided. The secretary, Nlrs. T. Brocklebank, presented th© balance sheet, which disclosed a credit balance of £42 7s 6d. A big effort is to be made in August to rai?© more funds to enable the society to increase its scope of work in the district. The following officers and committee were appointed for the coming year:-y President, Mrs. E. George; vice-presi-dent, Mrs. P. Grimmins; secretary. Nlrs. T. Brocklebank; assistant-secre-tary, Mrs. D.
