WOMAN KILLED BY LORRY

DRIVER CHARGED WITH j INTOXICATION TRAGEDY AT NAPIER Press Association NAPIER* Sunday. An elderly woman, Mrs. Mary Kingsland, wife of Mr. James Kingsland, of Te Awa, Napier, was knocked down and killed instantly yesterday afternoon by a motor-lorry driven by Mr. Reginald Frank Hunt, of Hastings. Mrs. Kingsland had just crossed the railway line at Todd Street on a bicycle, and was proceeding toward the town when the lorry, coming from tho opposite direction, knocked her off her machine. She fell under the wheels of the lorry and the front wheels passed over her body, which was dragged some yards before the lorry stopped. A constable took charge of the lorry and drove Hunt to the police station, where he is detained on a charge of being in charge of a motor vehicle 'wftiile, it is alleged, being in a state of intoxica.tion. The inquest was opened this morning before the coroner, Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M. James Kingsland said his wife was G2 years of age, and her sight and hearing were good. Witness reached the scene of the accident soon after it occurred. Witness told a constable on tho spot that Hunt was drunk, and witness noticed as Hunt went off with The constable that he could not walk steadily. Witness had no doubt Hunt I was drunk. ! The inquest was adjourned.
