PROMISING JUMPER

KAIRURI MAKING PROGRESS PROMOTED FROM THE LOGS The schooling at Ellerslie lately has not been unusually interesting, but with the Great Northern meeting only three weeks off the efforts of one or wo novice jumpers has brought light to bear on their prospects. By reason of the fact that he is a moderately good stayer and a horse with tons of pace, the two essays of the Surveyor gelding Kairunt have been watched with interest. He negotiated the pony hurdles at his first attempt at Ellerslie, but on Saturday he set out to clear four big ones, being?accompanied -by Rahepoto. The latter fell at the second, however, and Kairuri continued on alone. The first and the last obstacle he hit heavily, but the ether two were cleared in faultless style. It was a very pleasing exhibition, , and if Kairuri continues to make the progress anticipated, W. H. Patterson has a candidate who will win more than one hurdle race. “He has had some schooling over logs at the farm,’’ said his trainer on Saturday, “but this is his first attempt at the big hurdles.” Those who- saw Kairuri win in his initial start in the High-Weight at Takapuna in the late spring were much impressed, but subsequent to some placed performances his form showed deterioration. However, he has had time to freshen up, and next month he may show that his latest efforts were all wrong.
