SAVING HALF MILLION

PRUNING KNIFE INTO AUSTRALIAN ARMY UNITS REDUCED United P.A. —By telegraph—Copyright Rec. 11.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, Today. Drastic reductions in the units of the Australian Army are announced by the Adjutant-General, Major-Gen-eral Dodds. The whole of the 15 infantry brigades will be raised in future on the basis of three battalions to the brigade instead of four. Nine battalions will cease to be maintained and two Australian Light Horse regiments will be abandoned. These reductions are expected to contribute £25,000 to the £500,000 cut which is to be made in the Defence Estimates for the next financial year.
