WORK FOR THE BLIND
VICE-REGAL INTEREST FIRST VISIT TO INSTITUTE Great interest in the work of the inmates of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind was shown by the GovernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, who accompanied by Lady Bledisloe, made his first visit to the institute yesterday. Their Excellencies were met on their arrival by the chairman of trustees, Mr A. J. Hutchinson. Mrs N. A. Nathan, chairman of the ladies’ committee, the director, Mr. Clutha Mackenzie, and Mrs. Mackenzie, the matron. Miss C. Swanston, and the secretary, J. E. Broadfoot, and after the “National Anthem” had been played by the institute band, inspected every department, watching the adults at work and the children at school work. His Excellency talked with several blind exsoldiers and inspected the residential quarters. When the party adjourned to the assembly hall little Avis Barnet presented Lady Bledisloe with a beautiful Lasket bouquet, and a speecli of welcome was made by one of the boy scholars. Jack Short, who presented his Excellency with a lunch hamper. In welcoming the Vice-Regal visitors, Mr. Hutchinson referred to the kindly interest taken in the institute by previous representatives of the King in New Zealand. Lord Bledisloe said he intended to continue the interest, and would probably pay the institute another visit at no distant date. If it was reasonably possible he hoped to accept the invitation of the trustees to lay the foundation stone of the extensions to the workshops. Both he and her Excellency were keenly interested in the work of the blind.
