EARTHING EARLY POTATOES

If groAvths of any very early-planted potatoes are showing, through the soil, it will be necessarj' to earth them up, not only so that the growths may be supported, but also protected from the cold. The soil should be drawn close up to the stems, on both sides of the l-OAA', and be firmly patted with the spade. This procedure should be repeated again later, Avhen further groAvth has been made. If very large tubers are required, it is the custom to thin the growths to one a plant. If there is any doubt as to the fertility of the soil, now is the time to apply a chemical fertiliser. Take; 2 Jib superphosphate, Sib sulphate of ammonia, 31b sulphate of potash, aud mix these thoroughly together. Sprinkle a little of this along the toavs before earthing up, then draw the soil into place and firm well.
