Great Stars of Vaudeville
Memories of the Halls FEW ALIVE TODAY Names of great stars in the vaudeville world recalled wistful memories of .the wonderful days of the music hall, between 1880 and 1895, when the Entertainments Protection Association, Ltd., celebrated its jubilee recently, writes a London correspondent. The story of the “E.P.A.,” founded as long ago as 1880, to watch the interests of the music halls, is the story of the rise of the old pot-house to the 1930 palace. The first music halls were the Canterbury, Deacon’s, Alhambra, Collin’s, Gatti’s, Holborn Royal, Oxford, Pavilion, Royal Standard (now Victoria Palace), the Middlesex (Old Mogul), Metropolitan and the Tivoli. "And what incomparable artists they produced! Among the unforgettable names of the great days of the music hall which were remembered at the Savoy were: The Great Vance ("The Chlckaleery Cove”). Dan Leno (“The Shop Walker”). Charles Coburn (“The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo”). Charles Bignell (“What Ho She Bumps”). Leo Dryden (“The Miner’s Dream of Home”). Charles Godfrey ("After the Ball”). G. H. Chirgwin (“The White-Eyed Kaffir”), Eugene Stratton (“The Lily of Laguna”). Albert Chevalier (“My Old Dutch”). Joe Elvin (“’Appy ’Ampstead”). T. E. Dunville ("Then We Had Another One”). Tom Costello (“At Trinity Church I Met my Doom”). Jenny Hill—-The vital spark. Marie Lloyd (“She Winked the Other Eye”). Katie Lawrence (“Daisy Bell”). Lottie Collins ("Ta-ra-ra Boomderay”). Alice Leamar (“Her Golden Hair was Hanging Down Her Back”). Vesta Tilley-—The London idol. Lily Burnand (“Two Little Girls in Blue”). Florrie Forde (“Waltz Me Around Again, Willie”). Victoria Monks (“Give my Regards to Leicester Square”). Few of these artists are alive today. Lily Burnand toured New Zealand some time ago with the veterans of variety. Florrie Forde, an Australian, was in the Dominion many years ago. Vesta Tilly is now Lady de Freeth. )
