SOCCER SKILL

A TRIBUTE PAID BY ROWE HARDING In my book, on Rugby (remarks Rowe Harding) I said that Soccer was easily understood, and then added: “Juggling tricks amuse the mind of the child because their cleverness is apparent. A deeper insight is necessary to appreciate Rugby.” I did not mean to imply that because Soccer is easily understood it is easy to play. I believe that Soccer players attain a higher standard of physical skill than Rugby players, and sometimes their footwork and headwork are almost miraculous. The point I tried to make was that a good many of the qualities which make Rugby perhaps the best of all games to play are hidden from the superficial observer; for instance, the unselfish and unobtrusive work of a forward in the front row of the scrummage, unspectacular in itself, is as important to the team as the flashy brilliance of a fast-running wing.
