GRANT OF £l,ooo

GOVERNMENT HELP FOR MEMORIAL LIBRARY GRAMMAR SCHOOL ADDITION A grant of £I,OOO toward the cost of I erecting the diamond jubilee memorial library at the Auckland Grammar School has been approved by Cabinet Advice to this effect was receive yesterday from the Hon. A. J. Stall, worthy, Minister of Health, by the president of the Auckland Grammar School Old Boys’ Association, Mr. a. SL Clair Brown. A similar te]egn m was also received by the headmaster of the school, Mr. H. J. D. Mahon. At the time of the jubilee celebrations last August the library was first suggested, and one member of the Old Boys’ Association opened the fund with a donation of £250. Many generous gifts have been made since then and when the fund was closed at th; end of last month £1.015 had been subscribed. The building is estimated to cost £2,000, so that the amount collected by the old boys, with the grant now authorised by the Government, will cover the cost. j The library will be constructed in ! the same architectural design as the school and a design has already been prepared. The tentative site Is part of the area on the north-western *id=» of the school, with the entrance facing the school gates. Arrangements for the work will be made immediately and building wiil be commenced at an early date. The £2,000 in hand is for the actual building only, and does not cover the cost of stocking the library with books. The present school library, which ia situated on the eastern side of th.* main school building, on the second storey, is too small for the needs of th *. school. It contains a collection of books, including classics, fiction, reference books and works of travel. Tho school has an endowment from Mr. F Earle Vaile to purchase new book*, from time to time.
