Teachers v. Students

STAR RUGBY GAME Close Match Expected A FAST and closely-contested game should be seen at Eden •fl Park tomorrow when University and Training College will try conclusions on the main ground. . Although Training College has already been defeated twice this season, by Grammar on opening day and by Ponsonby last week, its performances have been much better than results indicate. In both games teachers by no means had the best of the luck, and tomorrow should see them make strenuous efforts to improve their position.

On opening Saturday, Varsity was beaten by Technical Old Boys after a display which certainly did not reflect the students’ best form. Last Saturday they registered a decided improvement by defeating Grafton by 31 to 8. But Grafton is far from being a strong side, and tomorrow’s game will prove a more difficult proposition. To be successful tomorrow, the Varsity backs will have to function much better than they have done this season, and the forwards will have to keep on the ball every minute of the game. The Grammar Old Boys’ team is a much-improved side this season, and against Marist they should not have a great deal of difficulty in registering another win. This will be the curtainraiser to the big game. On No. 2 ground Ponsonby will meet College Rifles, and this should result in an easy win for Ponsonby. At the showgrounds Technical _ Old Boys

should beat Grafton, but the ManukauCity game at Onehunga should provide a good even game. JUNIOR NOTES Rugby came into its own on Saturday, when competition games in all junior grades were started. This season’s contests have been invested with exceptional interest by the large entry of teams in all grades down to seventh, fully 1,800 players taking the field in the 120 odd fifteens which are participating in the competitions. The junior and third intermediate grades are particularly promising both numerically and in the standard of players, fully 20 teams being engaged in each of these sections. The quick plunge from summer to winter sport caused by Easter falling so late in April caused considerable confusion among teams on Saturday, many clubs not having had an opportunity of seeing new players who had joined up with them in action before. * * * In the second grade Marist seems to have built up a formidable team from the promising material it Possessed during the past season, and created a surprise by soundly defeating the runners-up, Grammar, in the first game by 23 points to three. The championship winners, Ponsonby A, had a comfortable win over the new team, Grammar colts, by 13 points to three. Technical Old Boys piled up a cricket of 36 points against a weak University fifteen.
