RUGBY CONFERENCE
OPPOSITION TO PROPOSAL Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. At a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union there was a brief discussion as to the proposed Empire conference, when the New Zealand Referees* Association wrote concerning “their representative at a conference to be held with the British team on its arrival.’* The chairman, Mr. S. S. Dean, said that this was the first he had heard of a conference with the British team on its arrival. The manager, Mr. James Baxter, would be invited to attend the next union meeting. He mentioned that more than one overseas union had opposed the idea of an Empire conference, including the South African Rugby Board. Mr. H. Leith: Well, that seems to be the end of it. An assurance from the Rotorua Union that every assistance possible would be made to make the British team’s stay there an enjoyable one, and an offer to make first-hand arrangements concerning accommodation and transport was received with thanks. The Radio Broadcasting Company wrote expressing appreciation of the union’s decision to grant permission for the broadcasting of British Rugby matches. The company is to be asked to forward a definite statement of its actual proposals.
