WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
TAUPIRI BRANCH MEETS Mrs. S. V. Irwin, district organiser of the National Federation of'Women's Institutes, addressed a well-attended meeting of the Taupiri and surrounding districts, in the Taupiri Public Library on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 6. Mrs. Irwin set forth the aims and objects of the institutes, after which it was decided to form an institute in Taupiri. Miss Roskrudge was chosen as the president and Mrs. T. White the secretary and treasurer. The management committee consists of the president, secretary and Mesdames Sowman, Clark, Smith, Plugge and W. Waring. The ITenry Soldier Settlement is represented by Mrs. Troupe; Koraakorau by Mesdames Clark, Williams and Smith; a representative for Kainui is to be elected at a later meetThe institutes are run by the members themselves, who meet once a month to exchange ideas and discuss such subjects of interest as rural education and housing; agriculture, domestic science, hygiene and social welfare; home handicrafts and rural economics. They are purely non-politi-cal and unsectarian, having for their object the unity of all classes, creeds and parties in the community with a common, bond of fellowship and active goodwill. The subscription is 2s per annum a member, and a membership badge may be procured for Is. The institutes are established in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture. PRESENTATION TO RETIRING SECRETARY AT NEW LYNN At the monthly meeting of the New Lynn Women’s Institute, the president, on behalf of the institute, presented the retiring secretary, Mrs. Reich, with an oak tray, in recognition of her valuable Avork while in office. Miss Gardner gave a highly interesting talk on the making of pottery, exhibiting
some beautiful specimens made by ; herself in New Lynn. Mesdames ! PurA’is and Ward were hostesses for j the afternoon. TE AT AT 17 There Avas a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Te Atatu Women’s Institute. Mrs. ChadAvick, the president, gave a A-erv interesting talk upon her experiences and A\ork among Avomen in England. Mrs. Willets sang, Mrs. Adamson gave a short reading, and Miss Shepherd a monologue. Tea Avas ser\*ed by |s. Pain and Mrs. Pijacun. TUAIvALT The monthly meeting of the Tuakau Women’s Institute Avas held last Aveek. Mrs. Lewis presiding. Visitors from Pukekohe Avere AA'elcomed, also Mrs. Prescott after a long absence. Plans for the furnishing of the Tuakau Public Library before the official opening Avere made, and later a avoo! work demonstration was giA-en by Mrs. Lgaa’ls. The hostesses AA-ere Mrs. R. E. Wing and Mrs. Morrow. PORT ALBERT Tho monthly meeting of the Port Albert Women’s Institute was held in the Public Hall. Mrs. G. H. Smith presiding. A demonstration of cake icing ay as given by Mrs. Watson, of Wellsford, and tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mrs. Legge and Mrs. Hutchison.
